Johnny Pesky is an Everlasting Presence with Red Sox

By Brendan Tyman on August 14, 2012 in Boston Red Sox

In Johnny Pesky’s later years, he never lost his love for the game of baseball and the Boston Red Sox.

Johnny Pesky was more than a former Boston Red Sox player. Pesky embodied the Red Sox and he became a cultural icon in the city of Boston.

Pesky passed away on Monday at the age of 92, but his spirit will continue to live among Red Sox players (past and present) who he helped tutor, coach, and shared stories with as well as Red Sox fans.

Pesky spent six decades with the organization he held dear to his heart and living in the same middle-class Swampscott home. He was married to his wife, Ruthie for 42 years before she passed away in 2005.

Whatever role Pesky filled for the Red Sox, he was exceptional. He played shortstop and second base for seven seasons with the Red Sox. Pesky was a career .307 hitter who had over 200 hits in his first three seasons as a professional. After Pesky’s rookie season, he fought in World War II. He was teammates with Ted Williams and he could tell people stories of Williams.

After Pesky’s playing career ended in 1954, he enjoyed roles as a player, manager, coach, assistant general manager, broadcaster, and a guide for young players. He would teach young players how to hit and play the game when he would spend parts of his summers with Red Sox minor league teams in Lowell and Pawtucket.  Overall, Pesky was an ambassador.

He hit fly balls to Jim Rice with his fungo bat and helped make Rice a better outfielder. Pesky was the first to congratulate Carlton Fisk after Fisk’s walkoff home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds because he was coaching first base.

At the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, Pesky was carried on a wheelchair by Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield. He enjoyed an embrace with Nomar Garciaparra. Pesky held a special place in his heart for Garciaparra.

Pesky was gracious the Red Sox named the right field foul pole after him in 2006.  He was honored that the Red Sox commemorated a minor league field in Fort Myers in his name . He enjoyed that the organization retired his number 6  in 2008 despite not being placed in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Overall, Pesky treasured the 2004 Red Sox team overcoming past demons to win the 2004 World Series title. Pesky was recognized by players such as Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, Kevin Millar, Pedro Martinez, etc. The players dedicated their efforts to Pesky for his loyalty and service. On Opening Day in April 2005, the Red Sox owners allowed Pesky and Carl Yaztremski to raise the 2004 championship banner

There will be something missing next season when Pesky will not be on the field wearing a Red Sox uniform at Fenway Park. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
