Making History: Danny O’Connor to Headline First Boxing Fight Card at Gillette Stadium

By Dan St. Pierre on July 26, 2012 in General

After much anticipation, fans of Framingham Boxer, Danny O’Connor collectively breathed a sigh of relief after it was announced the former U.S. Olympian would be making a return to the ring. After dismantling his previous opponent, Daniel Sostre, at the House of Blues in Boston on May 24th, O’Connor quickly sought a return back in the ring.

O’Connor left Massachusetts on June 15th to his training grounds in Houston, Texas in preparation of his next bout. As the Bay State native trained relentlessly under the tool ledge of renowned trainer, Ronnie Shields, as well as Strength and Conditioning Coach, Rick Karasch, his Manager Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphy’s, worked on making O’Connor’s next outing a fight for the record books.

As a diehard New England sports fan, O’Connor can now lay claim as the first fighter to ever step inside a ring at Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium. On Sunday August 12th, in a double feature event in which the New England Revolution host the Montreal Impact at 7:00pm, followed immediately after by a Main Event card of four fights.

O’Connor has always been a soccer fan, but his favorite team has always been the Major League Soccer’s, New England Revolution. On June 2nd, O’Connor was invited to represent the Revolution firsthand, as their Honorary Captain for the day. The passionate Revs supporters and O’Connor’s “Fan Family” have always coincided, thus making the event of even greater significance. The day marked a special occasion for the magician, but looking back on it now, he feels an even greater sense of pride, “It’s a humbling honor to have the opportunity to fight in front of such a loyal and dedicated fan base. It’s a dream come true to fight in front of the Revolution fans!”

Few could have predicted the recent commercial featuring the former Golden Gloves Champion, which Danny utters the phrase “Let’s Make History” was a sign of things to come. However, the diehard “Fan Family” of O’Connor’s would tell you when Danny O says he’s going to do something; he does exactly that.

O’Connor will enter the fight with an outstanding record of 17-1-0 with five victories coming via Knockout. The former U.S Future Stars National Champion’s adversary will enter the ring for the first time since May and will surely bring his best effort forward in this Light Welterweight scrap. At 27-years-old, Danny will arguably enter the fight in the best training shape of his career.

Whether you’re a fan of the Revolution or Boxing, August 12th gives New England sports fans a chance to partake in history. As a writer who bleeds the Bruins’ Black and Gold colors, how can you not feel pride in rooting on the Revolution against a Montreal team? Furthermore, there aren’t as many headlining Boxing matches in the New England area as yesteryear’s and this outdoor event will give any fan the nostalgic sentiments of being sports enthusiasts who had a part in a historic event. Like Danny O’Connor said… “Let’s Make History.”
