March Madness will commence today at 12:15pm with the #6 Murray St. Racers versus the #11 Colorado St. Rams Neither of those teams will be around for the Final Four or even the Sweet 16, but that tip-off will be highly rated around the country. Millions of people take part in their work or friendly bracket pools and they will pick dozens of different winners. The #1 seeds feature Syracuse, North Carolina, Michigan St. and Kentucky. Those four teams combined could probably fill the 1st round of the NBA draft in May. They have talent, size and great coaching, but only one of them will be called champ at the end. Of course, the #2 and #3 seeds will be dangerous with teams such as Duke and Kansas who have raised the banner before. Personally I like Kentucky’s mix of talent, coaching and desire.
Kentucky has the future #1 pick on their team in freshman Anthony Davis. Davis is 6’11″ and can shoot, dribble, rebound and block shots at an alarming rate. He has all the tools you could want in a big man and is only beginning to harness all of his talent. Davis is only part of what makes Kentucky arguably the favorite to win the tourney. There is also athletic, NBA-bound forwards in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Terrence Jones. Both offer scoring and rebounding to complement Davis’ attributes. Point guard Marquis Teague runs the show, getting the ball to the elite players that surround him.
The coach can be a deciding factor during the tournament and John Calipari is one of the best to ever do it. He brought UMass, Kentucky, Memphis all to the Final Four. He has a great ability to get his teams deep into the tournament, having lost a championship game with Memphis. His only blemish is his inability to be a champion at the end of March. This 2011-12 team will be possibly his best chance to win it all.
Enjoy the next few weeks of basketball and expect Kentucky to be the last team standing with a championship victory over North Carolina.
