The fourth week of the NFL season produced more double digit comebacks, some poor quarterback play, and stars going down with injuries.
The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers are still atop the NFC North with identical 4-0 records. The Lions play their first scheduled game on Monday night since 2001 when they play the Chicago Bears. Meanwhile the Packers travel to Atlanta to face off against one of the teams they knocked out in last season’s playoffs.
Tony Romo threw a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns that spearheaded the Lions defeating the Dallas Cowboys after the Cowboys had taken a 27-3 lead in the third quarter. New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez and Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco combined to complete 21 of 66 passes for two touchdowns to the opposing defenses. Sanchez also managed to fumble twice that was scooped up by the Ravens defense and brought back for scores.
Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans suffered a hamstring injury. The New England Patriots leading tackler and signal caller, Jerod Mayo, endured a sprained MCL in his knee. Ben Rothelisberger was seen on crutches and in a walking boot after the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-10 loss to the Texans.
There are some questions after this week. Is there anybody who can beat Aaron Rodgers and the Packers? Can the Philadelphia Eagles fix their defensive problems? How will the Steelers defense play without James Harrison, who has facial fractures?
Here are the Week 4 Power Rankings:
Rank |
Team |
Record |
Analysis |
1 |
Green Bay Packers |
4-0 |
Rodgers posted video game numbers, throwing for 408 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran the ball in twice versus the Denver Broncos. |
2 |
New Orleans Saints |
3-1 |
Their game was over after the first two possessions when the Saints cashed in for two scores because they were playing the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. |
3 |
Detroit Lions |
4-0 |
All hail, Megatron! Isn’t this what Matthew Stafford is saying to Calvin Johnson? |
4 |
Baltimore Ravens |
3-1 |
It always helps when the defense scores 21 points.
5 |
New England Patriots |
3-1 |
Their victory over the Oakland Raiders comes at a cost. Mayo’s injury could keep him out against the rival New York Jets.
6 |
Houston Texans |
3-1 |
The improved defense was able to knock out Roethlisberger and the Steelers.
7 |
San Diego Chargers |
3-1 |
Their three victories came against opponents who are a combined 1-11. Their one loss was in New England.
8 |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
3-1 |
They like playing it close to the chest.
9 |
New York Giants |
3-1 |
A controversial win for the G-Men when Victor Cruz apparently fumbled, but the referees said the Arizona Cardinals could not challenge the play.
10 |
Washington Redskins |
3-1 |
The song to the first quarter of their season should be Gloria Gaynor’s “ I Will Survive.” They have won two games by one possession.
11 |
Tennessee Titans |
3-1 |
Chris Johnson finally surpassed 100 yards and Matt Hasselbeck tossed three touchdowns to hand Tennessee their 3rd straight win.
12 |
Buffalo Bills |
3-1 |
Perhaps, they are living the reverse theory. They play better from behind than when they are ahead.
13 |
Pittsburgh Steelers |
2-2 |
The Steelers are averaging 16 points per game through the first four weeks.
14 |
New York Jets |
2-2 |
The Jets look like they have lost their identity over the past couple of seasons and it is leading to frustration in the locker room. They cannot run the ball and stop the run.
15 |
San Francisco 49ers |
3-1 |
Frank Gore finally had a breakout game.
16 |
Chicago Bears |
2-2 |
Devin Hester and Matt Forte are the most threatening weapons on this team and the Carolina Panthers could not stop them.
17 |
Atlanta Falcons |
2-2 |
The Falcons nearly blew a 27-7 advantage, which begs the question: Is their defense a championship-caliber unit?
18 |
Dallas Cowboys |
2-2 |
Romo continues to make poor decisions when the Cowboys have a lead.
19 |
Oakland Raiders |
2-2 |
Penalties (9 for 85 yards) and turnovers (two “bone-headed” decisions by Jason Campbell) plagued the Raiders.
20 |
Cincinnati Bengals |
2-2 |
Andy Dalton and the young-ins showed character when they bounced back from a poor first half to hand the Bills their first loss.
21 |
Philadelphia Eagles |
1-3 |
The Eagles could not hold onto their lead. Is Philly panicking?
22 |
Cleveland Browns |
2-2 |
They fell behind, but Colt McCoy should not be attempting 61 passes and Peyton Hillis gets only 10 carries.
23 |
Carolina Panthers |
1-3 |
Cam Newton should just ask Ron Rivera if he can play on defense.
24 |
Kansas City Chiefs |
1-3 |
Minnesota wants the #1 pick more than the Chiefs.
25 |
Seattle Seahawks |
1-3 |
Hasselbeck is looking good in Tennessee.
26 |
Arizona Cardinals |
1-3 |
They did not get any help from the officials, but the defense allowed 21 points in the final quarter.
27 |
Jacksonville Jaguars |
1-3 |
Their stadium personnel does not even know which way to point the arrows because the Jaguars’ offense keeps going backwards.
28 |
Denver Broncos |
1-3 |
Don’t worry Nebraska fans because the Broncos probably could not prevent Wisconsin from posting 40-plus points.
29 |
Miami Dolphins |
0-4 |
The Dolphins’ fans are rejoicing the team is in a bye week.
30 |
St. Louis Rams |
0-4 |
Steven Jackson returns and the Rams only put up 10 points at home.
31 |
Indianapolis Colts |
0-4 |
The Colts’ injury report keeps getting worse. They lost Gary Brackett and Melvin Bullitt to season-ending injuries last week. Last night their offensive line became decimated when Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana went down.
32 |
Minnesota Vikings |
0-4 |
When does Adrian Peterson ask for a trade?
